Passing out prescription birthcontrol to middle school students, what do you think?
I heard on the radio this morning that this middle school in Oregon plans on distributing prescribed birth control to their students. School officials stated that the reason they're planning to do this is because parents should not ignore the fact guyren in this age bracket are having sex. However, many parents argue that middle school students are too young to have birth control pills. The dj stated that he agrees with the parents. He also stated that he thinks it is ok to pass out birthcontrol pills to high school students. What do you think?
Honestly, excluding all the health risks, I agree. Somtime in the next year the male contraceptive is going to be realesed on the market, in the clinical trial it is 100% effective, among the several forms the the contraceptive comes in, one is a device that can be implanted in the arm (also removed at anytime reversing the contraceptive) and lasts for around nine years. I think that at fourteen boys should have this device implanted and removed at 24 when it wears out. I think that if we can find a way to give people in this country time to grow up and become educated we would have alot less problems in our society.
What are good instrumental songs to teach to middle school students?
I am teaching a band class outside of school do guys from 11-13 years old for more advanced middle school students. Does any one have any suggestions about songs or even games I can play with the guys? Preferably music/rhythm related games. And middle school advanced music. Not high school level yet. Maybe some Disney stuff or something they'd be interested in and have fun playing. Thank you so much!!!
I'd ask the guys to bring in instrumental stuff that they like. It would teach them the concept. If there are no words it can't really be offensive and you could learn a lot about their taste.
Best way to encourage Korean middle school students to speak English in class?
I just started teaching English at a middle school in South Korea. My focus is mainly on improving their speaking abilities. The problem is I see the students only once a week for 45 minutes. Classroom size average around 30 students, all with very limited English skills.

1) What is the best way to utilize the very limited amount of time I have?

2) What are some methods I could use to encourage students to speak English?
I introduce humor into the classroom when the guys don't listen or try hard enough:

Sometimes, I would simply mime something when they are talking so they look up to me to try and understand what I am saying or talk loudly and completely gibberish and tell them that in English class all other languages sound like this. You could even write gibberish on the board and ask them to say- it also exercises their vocal skills.

Have lots of riddles in rhymes. Make up nonsense poems with them.

Have a fun "punishment" for every time they speak in Korean. I have a buddy system so when they talk their partners go up to them and sing in their ears or something silly but it works.

Catch the pulse of your class and see what works best with your class. Have humourous and innovative things to deter them to speak in vernacular. Have lots of games in English and most importantly, guyren tend to think in their native tongue so you have to make them see the beauty of the English language. Make some charts with beautiful graphics and word searches and put them up in class so they see them. Bring them beauty into the presentaion too leaving aside dull textbooks.

Most of all have fun and enjoy the learning process with them :)
Are middle school students really that mean to the teacher?
I am thinking about becoming either a elementary or middle school teacher. But I was wondering if the students in middle school are mean to the teacher.
I am a middle school teacher and I say, as a whole, middle schoolers are probably meaner than elementary schoolers. However, that comes down to a variety of factors; mainly puberty. They have sudden surges of hormones that can cause them to act in unpredictable ways. For example, my students ripped my Christmas tree apart while I was absent. The next day, they bought me a new one--unrequested. Also, many middle schoolers are finding themselves either just being diagnosed with learning disabilities or behavior disorders, or in the process. They are also at the age where they look like adults, but do not have the cognitive abilities--especially the decision making skills--of adults and often times teachers (and parents) forget that fact and have unreasonable expectations. My advice would be for you to observe middle school classrooms where an experienced teacher is present. Elementary guyren are often very cute, but middle schoolers can get jokes and make you laugh more than the younger guys. Personally, I enjoy the middle grades because I like the inside jokes and the constant soap-opera like recounts I get from the guys about what goes on. Also, the curriculum is a bit more interesting and challenging. Good luck!
Why are middle school students passing around beer salt and what is it?
Middle school students are passing beer salt around. What is it and why do they want it?
Beer salt does not have beer in it or anything alcoholic. I have seen guys at my school with it and i believe it is just a sodium filled candy (of some sort) if i were to judge, i think it is highly disgusting but that's my opinion. Hoped i answered your question to the best of my ability. :)
Can you think of any ways to reward Middle School Students after State Testing?
My mom teaches middle school students, and her and the other teachers are thinking about how to reward the students. This will include 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. They're going to do a reward a day. So far they have dodgeball tournaments and karaoke. The teachers are having a hard time thinking of some more rewards. Any suggestions?
A big party? After I finished CST in 6th grade, the teacher threw a party for us. Though in your case, it's gonna be a little difficult as it includes all three grades.
Or a dance. That's the best option if it's all three grades.

Hope that helps ;P
When tutoring middle school students, what are some good activies for helping them in reading/writing?
I tutor a few middle school students during the week and most of them need help with their math, which is basically clear cut answers and solutions to their problems. Lately, most of them have been needing help with their reading/writing assignments. Besides helping them on their actual homework, what are some good fun ideas for activities in helping these students with their reading/writing problems? Thanks!
Depends on what the individuals need help on, but here are some things I do to help my son in certain areas:

1. Reading comprehension. He cannot visualize what is being written, so to practice I have him watch movies with the subtitles/captions on. In reading the words he learns to connect words with actions and understand how they function.

2. Writing. To help figure out description and other fiction concepts, I had him take a panel or two from a comic book and write it as a scene. It helped a bit.

Why not have students rewrite dry textbook narrative as a dialogue, such as an interviewer and an "expert." By figuring out how to ask for the information provided they will learn what is most important in that information.

Thank you to you and everyone who tutors. You are unsung heroes.
What is up w/ alll the middle school students in Georgia who are failing the CRCT?
I heard it on the radio this morningfrom the state superintendent. She said they changed it this year and that 5o% of students in Georgia failed math and 80% failed Social Studies.
Are there any middle school guys out there that think that you weren't taught what was on the test this year? I mean even honor roll students where failing math. That's ubelievable, even w/ Georgia having one of the worst school systems in the country.
They only failed the Social Studies part of the CRCT exam.

The CRCT exam was changed this year, and some idiot at the testing company thought it was "Socialist Studies". So there were questions like:

23. Who said at the wall between East and West Berlin, "Tear down this wall."
a. Mikhail Barisnikov
b. Mikhail Gorbachev
c. Roger Waters
d. Josef Stalin
(test answer sheet showed (b); but the correct answer, Ronald Reagan, wasn't one of the answers on the test).

38. Our form of representative government, which allows for freedom and liberty for the people is:
a. Oligarchy
b. Social communism
c. Third party
d. Checks and balances
(test answer sheet showed (b); but Republic government wasn't even on the list, which is the correct answer)

After reviewing the exam and finding it was all skewed to be some socialist Marxist fantasy of what the world should be like, the state decided the test was stunningly flawed and threw out the results.

(Nice try liberals, but you can't brainwash our guys THAT openly.)
How do middle school students in New York dress?
Please Help! I currently live in Florida where we wear shorts and skirts and stuff.... but this year im going to move to New York and have no idea how people dress in middle school because I've never been there! Please tell me how middle school students dress in New York... or any place that is cold!
all of them wear abercrombie and fitch, hollister, and american eagle. In manhattan, thats where i go to school, they shop at sak's fifth avenue, anthropologie, barneys, and especially bloomingdales. they like to call it bloomies and they love it. But all the clothes in these stores are more than a $100 for a shirt. Otherwise just buy abercrombie, hollister, and american eagle which are all cheap brands. everyone wheres it. These three cheaper brands are best suited for public schools, but work anywhere. The other, more expensive stores should only be for those in manhattan and those who go to private schools there since they are filled with rich guys. the average private school in manhattan is $30,000 a year and up so its hard to blend in with their expensive clothes. I go to one on a scholarship though so I'm able to buy expensive clothes. Don't worry about what you wear, you are in middle school. Start caring in high school. Some people in middle school are still shopping at limited too. Plus you grow out of your clothes fast. Save your money for the more designer ones everyone will have in high school. Im 17 and lived here my whole life by the way.
How to start Public Speaking Club for High School and Middle School students?
I would like to teach a public speaking class to some high school and middle school students. I am going to call it a Public Speaking Club, but it will be more like workshops, once a week for about an hour.

Does anyone know of any websites I can go to in order to find a curriculum, or possibly just give me some help on creating different exercises to help the students become better public speakers?

I want it to be fun!

Thanks :)
Where are you located? Every state and many districts are involved in competitive speech tournaments. There, the public speaking events would be extemporaneous and impromptu, and maybe a few others. Try speaking to teachers to see if speech exists. If not, the National Forensic League has many resources to help you get started.

I know this isn't the same thing, but since the league already exists, it's educational and the students will compete for awards. That extra incentive really will help them work hard. This site has help for working on "extemporaneous" which is a limited preparation activity which asks people to answer a question related to current events in a 7 minute speech. There are also curriculum guides. Check the second site to contact someone in your area for getting started.
